The overall population of Buenos Aires, as of 2010, is 15,790,000. This includes the combined population of CBD, urban and metropolitan areas. The metropolitan areas are home to 12,741,364 people and counting. The city/CBD areas house 2,890,151 people. Although this is one of the lesser populated megacities, the population density accounts for this, as the city area is only 203 square km. Its population density is 14,000 people per square km, which is higher than the population density of 236 different countries. Argentina, however, does not have that high a population density as it only houses 14 people per square km. Buenos Aires' suburban population has skyrocketed since 1950, escalating from 2 million to 10 million. Interestingly, the CBD population has stayed roughly the same, hovering at around 3 million. Buenos Aires is one of the most multicultural cities in South America. Its inhabitants have heritage from Scotland, Norway, Poland, France, Portugal, Sweden, Greek, Czech Republic, Croatia, Holland, Russia, Serbia, the UK and Bulgaria, just to name a few. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, though a recent survey shows that only 20% of people actually pray and go to church regularly. Pope Francis, in fact, the first Pope to be born in the Americas, was born in Buenos Aires. It is also home to the biggest mosque in South America, meaning that it also has a strong Islamic population.
